Bucyrus, later Bucyrus-Erie and then Bucyrus International, stayed in South Milwaukee for 118 years, building some of the largest steam shovels, draglines, and mining equipment in the world, before Caterpillar acquired the company in 2011. The old Bucyrus-Erie office buildings on Milwaukee Avenue are still standing right downtown, and as of the mid-2020s they’re being converted into apartments, more than a century after the deal that brought the company here in the first place.
